I’m tired of hearing fans while doing really nit picky mixing and mastering projects. I canceled my order for the 14” after seeing that heat/fan and battery tests posted. Going 16”, M1 Pro, 32GB and 1TB SSD this time so I don’t have to slam my system. I have to hold my entire live performance on an external SSD for it to be usable. Between the memory swap and lack of storage it really puts pressure on things. Hell, it can’t even keep up with song project files and audio mastering projects in Logic. I get system overload messages constantly and my SSD cannot keep up with large Ableton sessions when I’m performing live. Really kicking myself for at least not getting more storage. this is a device you’ll likely keep for more than 3 or 4 years.Įveryone told me 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD would be enough for me in a 15” MBP a few years ago. Sure the swap is fast in these new MBPs, but I’d certainly recommend 32GB if your workloads are heavy. sometimes I have multiple projects at hand and can’t just close certain apps. many of my photoshop projects eat up 40GB easily while scratch disk uses over 200GB of space, and there’s almost always more than just photoshop that’s open in the background, like illustrator that’s in used simultaneously for vector elements and layouts that I’m using in photoshop. and he only ran the memory stress level to “yellow”. Not all the tests shown in here are heavy enough.

If you do need to run virtual machines and more than “somewhat heavy workloads” on stuff like simulation, music and graphics editing.

Same, I wouldn’t recommend compromising the performance and longevity on these pro machines by getting just the 16GB, especially when these models check almost every box on the list, and somehow get capped by the memory limit, it’d be kind of a shame.

As a software engineer, that benchmark doesn’t tell me anything about performance for my workflow. It’s silly in exactly the same way to have a unified “compilation benchmark”. We don’t have a single “content creation benchmark” because everyone’s workflow is different. If that’s what you do, you may as well get an M1 air and save your money for an M2 or M3 or something later. So that’ll perform about the same on the M1 air, pro, and max. Lots of people in the javascript ecosystem use webpack which (last I checked) was single threaded. But when working on my current rust project, my computer uses less than 4gb of ram. My 8 core ryzen machine peaks at about 24gb ram usage while compiling Firefox (C++ / Clang). Different compilers put pressure on your computer in very different ways. Please note: As this video shows, Lightroom, premier and other programs have very different memory pressure characteristics. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
